Getting Started

What would you like me to paint?

I paint wildlife and landscapes. Often people ask me to paint pets or a special places like a family homes or holiday spot.

Pet portraits are usually either;

head and shoulders on a plain background (least expensive)

full body

more than one animal

background scene of some type

Pet Portraits

If you would like more than one pet in a painting and have a good reference photo of two or more pets together as you would like them painted that is great, but if not, don't worry, send me what you can and I can edit the image on the computer first or draw some preliminary sketches for your approval first.

The better the quality of photograph, the more information available to me to make your painting as detailed as possible.

Often the end result is achieved through looking at more than one picture, for example a closer picture of the face & eyes can be helpful if the main photo for composition is too distant. or one with good lighting for accurate colouring. Also a background image may be separate to the photo of the dog (landscape for example).

If I live close I can take a picture for you, or if it would ruin a surprise in the case of a gift, you can buy a gift voucher and we get a good photo after the gift is given.

Choice of Medium

I like to paint in oil, acrylic or watercolour or sketch in pencil.

Oils and Acrylics are painted on artist quality stretched cotton canvas.

Watercolour or pencil are painted or sketched on archival quality papers. I can arrange framing or supply them on a backing board ready for you to take to your own framer. These two options will need to be framed with glass to preserve the artwork. Oils require a longer drying time.

Have a look through my pet portrait gallery and see which style you prefer.

Pricing depends on size, medium, head and shoulder or full body, number of animals & if there is to be a plain background or a scenic background I have simplified this below in a price chart.

After you have decided which medium and size painting you would like, call me or message me, or send me an email.

I'm happy to discuss your ideas prior to and throughout the commission process.

How long will your painting take? Each painting is highly detailed bringing the character of your pet into the piece though the tiny detail and layers of depth to create the softness of fur and sharpness of eye. It generally takes anywhere from 2-3 weeks.

Factors include my waiting list - first come first served (all good things are worth waiting for). The medium you choose (oil will require drying time) also the composition itself, the amount of work and detail in the painting.
